Private Music Tuition was the very start of the Jayne Guest Music journey and is still one of Jayne’s favourite things to do today. She started giving private piano lessons when she was 15 and some of my first pupils are now music teachers themselves.
Since we are ‘Jayne Guest Music’, obviously we like to do things a little differently. If your child is a complete beginner just come and give us a go from the start, don’t worry about the ‘other’ ways.
If your child has been having lessons elsewhere….. which of these are familiar?
Being given lists of music books to buy (and realising you forgot 10 minutes before the next lesson)?
Yeah…nope…. We purchase ALL the music books for you and simply invoice you for them with your next lesson invoice. You just concentrate on being a busy parent, we’ve got the behind the scenes stuff.
Endless lessons for not much reward?
For those who want to, we are going to throw in exams as regularly as your child’s progress allows. BIG DIFFERENCE however, we are not going to wait until your child is capable of nothing but a distinction, we are not going to drill them on their exam pieces for 18 months. Exams are a tool to aide learning, they are not the end goal in themselves. If our child needs a bit of extra motivation, lets' do an exam, if they have been working incredibly hard, let's do an exam. And what if your child doesn’t want to do exams… we have regular opportunities to perform, pupil’s concerts etc. We will always gently encourage your child to share their music making. (Invariably, we can tell you that the children who just come to lessons with no exams and no performing ALWAYS give up in the end, not going to sugar coat that one for you).
Having to re-mortgage your house for private music tuition?
The Musicians Union rate for private lessons is £35.00 an hour. We honestly think this is a little bit steep! Yes, I am a professional and want to be paid according to my knowledge and experience, but, you shouldn’t need to pay £17.50 for a weekly lesson for your 8 year old to learn anything!! We don’t want to massively undercut other local teacher so we set our rates at a slightly more reasonable £12.00 per lesson.
Being told your child is too young?
Nah…. Everyone can learn. If your child struggles to learn the way we teach we will just come up with a way that works for them. Jayne has been doing this for soooooooo long, and met sooooooo many children along the way that she’s pretty adaptable at this point. Your child is an individual, we will treat them as such. (and we take children from age 4 upwards, if your child is of pre school age, have a look at our melody mouse classes).
